Kumon Nurtures the Ability to Think
“Will my child make it in the real world after college/university?” is a question that confronts parents of school-aged children today. Parents go to great lengths seeking the best education they can provide to ensure a promising future for their kids. Past generations have regarded college diplomas as the key to secure one’s future. However, the increasingly complex standards we live with today have created a need not just for a college diploma, but also for a clear, constructive thinking.
Tokuhiro Kimata of the Kumon Institute of Education identifies the following characteristics sought by companies from potential employees today:
All of these characteristics can be developed through Kumon. This is because Kumon goes beyond teaching children what to think. We do not give the fish that we have already caught to children, but we coach them how to catch fish so that they can independently enjoy fishing in the future. Aside from increasing their academic skills, Kumon hones their ability to sift information and learn continuously.
It is Kumon’s goal to train students to be independent. To achieve this, we coach students to learn new topics or solve problems by studying the examples from worksheets or analyzing the answers found in the solution book. As they advance, they also learn to set goals and be in full control of their progress. Through this self-learning process, Kumon students develop their ability to think clearly and critically, equipping them to solve any challenge they may face in the future.
